Channel Managed, 13/07/2010

The AAA School of Advertising recently welcomed two new additions to the teaching staff, with Constance Smith and Kevin Portellas joining the Johannesburg and Cape Town campuses respectively. Smith teaches Copywriting and Portellas specialises in DTP (Desktop publishing).

“We are very excited to welcome Constance and Kevin to the team at AAA,” says Ludi Koekemoer, Principal and Managing Director of the AAA School. “They are both highly qualified and respected professionals in their individual fields, and we are privileged to have them on board.”

Smith began her career as a copywriter in Johannesburg, first working for Lindsay Smithers FCBImpact and handling accounts such as Toyota, Sanlam Properties and Vodacom. She then spent a year with Tool Communications where she worked on big name accounts such as Microsoft, BMW and Abbot Pharmaceuticals. In 1999 Smith was appointed the Deputy Creative Director as well as Senior Copywriter at BLGK Bates, where she oversaw accounts such as Nestle, British American Tobacco and Coca Cola. Smith then moved to London for a two-year stint, where she worked as a freelance copywriter for the likes of BHWG (now Proximity), Mercier Grey, Ping Communications and The BV Group. On returning to Johannesburg in 2002, Smith continued to work as a freelancer for leading agencies such as TBWA Gavin Reddy, TBWA Hunt Lascaris and Tequila. She has received numerous accolades for her work including five Loerie awards, two New York Festival awards and two London International awards.

“I love teaching at the AAA School,” says Smith. “It is tremendously encouraging to discover how talented the future writers of our country are.”

Portellas started his career in DTP as a designer and producer for Herdbuoys McCann Erickson in 2001, where he was responsible for setting up the IT/Mac department, commissioning photographers and handling all the print production for Caltex above and below the line. In 2003 he joined Hirt & Carter as a graphic designer, overseeing design and layout for various clients. Portellas then joined Young & Rubicam, where he began working as a freelance graphic designer. He was soon promoted to Art Director, working on a variety of high profile accounts such as Caltex, Martell Brandy and the Taj Hotel. In December 2009 he was promoted to Studio and Digital Manager, responsible for training and overseeing two junior art directors and ensuring the smooth running of the studio. This year Portellas received a Gold award at the New York Festival, a Silver at the One Show awards, and was a finalist at the Clios.

“It is very rewarding to be involved in the development of our young talent, and I’m thrilled to be a part of such a high calibre team of industry professionals at the AAA School,” says Portellas.
